| My heart was captured by a small Toy Fox Terrier (TFT) in Shawnee Mission, Kansas in 2001. I had taken my car in for a minor repair. While my son & I were waiting, we went next door to the local pet store. There she was, the new love of our lives. We asked to see her & fell in love. I just stood there & watched as my son played with her. He begged & begged, "can we get her mom?" Little did he know, but there was no reason for him to beg. The minute she was handed to me I had decided to get her. She was so tiny, sweet, & innocent. I, on the other hand, was naive. I had no idea the reputation of pet stores who sell puppies. I had no idea most pet stores get their puppies from "puppy mills". At the time I got her I had no idea about "breed standards" and how to pick a properly bred puppy. We walked out with "Miss Tinkerbell" & a book on Toy Fox Terriers. This was on Jan. 26th, 2001. After reading the book & taking her to the vet, I realized she was no where near breed standards. It was the vet that educated me on pet stores & why you should never buy a puppy from a pet store. I accepted all of this and was just glad to have a healthy puppy. "Healthy puppy" so I thought. A few nights later Tinkerbell woke me up with diarrhea. This went on all night. I had decided to take her to the vet in the morning. The news was devastating, it was "Parvo." After being hospitalized for a few days she showed no sign of improvement. On Feb. 4th, the vet called me and said "It's time, can you be here in the morning." I agreed. On Feb. 5th, just 2 days before my birthday I drove to the my vets office. I was not looking forward to seeing her in misery and having to give the final say to have her put to rest. I was heart broken and relieved when my vet said "I am sorry, but she didn't make it through the night." As I said my final good byes, it was then I decided I would do my best to help educate others the best I can. I gave up my job & went to work for a vet. I also became an accredited K-9 instructor. After waiting and searching for TFT breeders, I finally came home with Lucky. Then a few months later I was blessed with Miss Tinkerbell Too. Because of Cindy Warner, Ron & Collen Byrd, & all those with the Heart Land Toy Fox Terrier Association I started showing. It was then I decided to breed to maintain purity and to promote breed standards. I do not breed for profit. |
